    Installation Guide Preface Preface This guide describes the RUGGEDCOM RS950G. It describes the major features of the device, installation, commissioning and important technical specifications. It is intended for use by network technical support personnel who are responsible for the installation, commissioning and maintenance of the device.

    Introduction Introduction The RUGGEDCOM RS950G is an IEC 62439-3 PRP redundancy box (RedBox). The RS950G provides the ultimate in network reliability with Zero-Packet-Loss™ and zero failover time from any network fault. The latest redundancy protocol specified in IEC 62439-3, parallel redundancy protocol (PRP), ensures zero-millisecond failover operation.

Generation of PRP supervision frames also consumes bandwidth. As a result, the network designer should keep in mind the overhead introduced by the PRP network when calculating the network capacity.

Make sure the screws are hand-tightened. Place the device against the panel and align the mounting brackets with the mounting holes.

    Before connecting the device, be aware of the following recommendations and considerations: • Siemens does not recommend the use of copper cabling of any length for critical, real-time substation automation applications. All copper Ethernet ports on RUGGEDCOM products include transient suppression circuitry to protect against damage from electrical transients and conform with IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 Class 1 standards.
