Instructions. This manual describes how to operate the scanner application “Scanning Utility 5000” provided with the DR-5020/5080C. Be sure to read this manual and the separate DR-5020/5080C Instructions before use to ensure that the functions of the DR-5020/5080C are effectively utilized. Scanner drivers such as an ISIS or TWAIN driver are not required as the scanner application packaged with the DR- 5020/5080C uses an exclusive scanner driver.
Tips about operations and how to avoid minor difficulties. HINT This Unit This manual refers to the DR-5020 and DR-5080C collectively as the “scanner.” If a description is required for each individual machine type, this manual refers to the scanner specifically by DR-5020 and DR-5080C.

Check the displayed installation directory, and then click [Next]. To change the installation directory, click [Browse], and then choose the new installation directory. Installation begins.

There are five items to set in the basic scan conditions: Mode, Resolution, Page Size, Brightness and Contrast. For details on settings, see “2.4 Setting Scan Conditions”...
2.2 Scanning Procedure Loading and Scanning a Document Load a document on the document tray and start scanning. There are two ways of scanning documents: scanning two or more pages, and scanning just one page and then confirming the scanned image. Scanning two or more pages You can scan documents comprising two or more pages in one of four modes: Remote, Auto, Semi-Auto and Manual.

Chapter 2 Scanning a Document File Type displays the various file formats that you can save scanned images in. The following four file types matched to the mode that you are scanning the HINT document in are displayed: TIFF (*.tif), BMP (*.bmp), JBIG (*.jbg), JPEG (*.jpg) When TIFF is selected, the image spread over several scanned pages (including scanning in the Duplex mode) is saved as a single file.

2.2 Scanning Procedure Click [Start Scanning]. Scanning starts. If scanning does not start, check to see if all the Feeding Option key lamps on the operation panel on the scanner are OFF (Remote mode). MEMO Scanning is paused when the document tray runs out of pages to scan.
Chapter 2 Scanning a Document Scanning just one page and confirming the scanned image Before you start scanning a document comprising a number of sheets, you can scan just one page and confirm the scanned image. In this scan mode, the scanned image is not automatically saved.
2.2 Scanning Procedure Confirming the Scanned Image Display the scanned image on the screen for confirmation. Confirm the scanned image on screen. You can use the buttons on the tool bar to enlarge or reduce the display of the image, and rotate the scanned image for confirmation. HINT Displays the image so that its width matches the width of the window.
Chapter 2 Scanning a Document Saving the Scanned Image About save formats Scanned images can be saved to files in one of the TIFF, BMP, JPEG or JBIG file formats. The available file save format varies according to the Scanning Mode setting during actual scanning.
2.2 Scanning Procedure When TIFF is selected, the image spread over several scanned pages (including duplex scanning) is saved as a single file. MEMO When you select the BMP, JPEG or JBIG format, each of the pages in the document are saved as separate files in the folder specified as the save destination.

Chapter 2 Scanning a Document Opening Image Files Open the file contained a scanned image. Only TIFF, BMP, JPEG, JBIG images saved on the Scanning Utility 5000 can be opened as image files on Scanning Utility 5000. MEMO Select [File] - [Open], or click on the Tool Bar.
Various Scanning Modes You can scan documents in various ways on Scanning Utility 5000. For example, you can change the feed mode for the document is to be fed according to your particular scanning requirements, scan both sides of a document, or scan documents at high speed.

2.3 Various Scanning Modes The following describes the procedure for selecting the feed mode and the scanning procedure according to each feed mode. Selecting the feed mode Either select [File] - [Scanner setting], or click on the Tool Bar. The Scanner Settings dialog box is displayed. In the Scanner Settings dialog box, click [Detail].

Chapter 2 Scanning a Document At Feeding Option, select the feed mode. Feeding Option Click [OK] to return to the Scanner Settings dialog box. Click [OK] to return to the scan operation screen. The feed mode can also be set on the operation panel of the scanner. Press the [Feeding Option] key on the operation panel to light the lamp of the desired feeding MEMO mode.
2.3 Various Scanning Modes Scanning in the Semi-Auto mode Set the feed mode to the Semi-Auto mode and then scan the document. Carry out the operation described in “Selecting the Feed Mode” and select “Semi-Auto”. Semi-Auto on the operation panel lights. Either select [File] - [Scan batch to file], or click on the tool bar.

Press the Start key on the scanner’s operation panel. Scanning starts. When the scanner runs out of document sheets to scan, the document tray is lowered, and the scanner waits for the next document to be loaded.

2.3 Various Scanning Modes Load the next document on the document tray and press the Start key on the scanner’s operation panel. When the scanner runs out of document sheets to scan, press the Stop key. The Start Scanning (paused) dialog box appears. To stop scanning, click [Stop Scanning].

2.3 Various Scanning Modes Scanning in the Manual mode Each page of the document is scanned as you manually insert them into the scanner one sheet at a time. Carry out the operation described in “Selecting the Feed Mode” and select “Manual”. Manual on the operation panel lights, and the document tray rises.

Chapter 2 Scanning a Document Click [Start Scanning]. Load one sheet on the document tray. The document is scanned, and the scanner waits for the next document to be inserted. Continue to insert the document, one page at a time. When scanning ends, press [Stop Scanning].

2.3 Various Scanning Modes To stop scanning, click [Stop Scanning]. To continue scanning, click [Start Scanning], and return to step 5. Even after scanning has ended, the document tray will not be lowered until you cancel the Manual mode. Cancel this mode by pressing the Feeding Option key or MEMO by “Selecting the feed mode”...
• You can also perform duplex scanning using Function Sheets (Scanner Control Sheets). If the scanner control sheet is set on the top of the document, both sides of the document are automatically scanned. For more details, see the “Using Function Sheets” (P.48) or refer to the separate DR-5020/5080C Instructions.
2.3 Various Scanning Modes Directly Printing Scanned Images Images of scanned documents can be printed out as they are. In this case, scanned images are not saved to file. The scanned image is automatically printed out on the printer currently selected at Normally Used Printer.
Insert this Function Sheet before the next document, and load it together with the document in the scanner. • For more details on the above sheets, see the separate DR-5020/5080C Instructions or the Function Sheet Instructions.
2.3 Various Scanning Modes The following describes the respective procedures for scanning documents using these Function Sheets. Scanner Control Sheet Before you use a Scanner Control Sheet when scanning a document, select the sheet detect setting. Either select [File] - [Scanner setting], or click on the Tool Bar.

Control Sheet • None Scanner Control Sheets are not detected. • Scan, Continue Scanning The scanner Control Sheet is detected and scanned, and then scanning continues. • Skip, Continue Scanning The scanner Control Sheet is detected and skipped (not scanned), and then scanning continues.
2.3 Various Scanning Modes Job Separation Sheet When you use a Job Separation Sheet, scanning is carried out in the same way as regular scanning except that you select the detection setting when you instruct start of scanning. Make the scan settings and scan the document according to the currently selected feed mode.

Though the document feed speed is increased, reducing the time it takes to scan a document, image quality is slightly impaired. High-speed scanning can be executed only when the resolution is set to 200 dpi or 300 dpi.

Press the Count Only key on the scanner’s operation panel. Count Only key The Count Only key and Semi-Auto lamp light, and the Start key turns green.

2.3 Various Scanning Modes When you have set the number of pages in the document, press the Count Only key to cancel the Count Only mode. To reset the counter display, hold down the Stop key for at least two seconds. MEMO If you don’t know the number of pages in the document Use the scanner’s count function to count the number of pages.
Chapter 2 Scanning a Document Scanning documents If the number of pages that you entered (or, counted) differs from the actually scanned number of pages, an error message appears on the counter displayed after scanning is finished. Scan the document according to the currently selected feed mode. Refer to the page indicated for details on each feed mode.

2.3 Various Scanning Modes • If the actual number of scanned pages is less than the number of pages displayed on the counter display: The counter display changes to “U02” to indicate a verify count error. Go back and start counting the number of pages in the document again. A probable cause is that double-feed is occurring.
Chapter 2 Scanning a Document Setting Scan Conditions Set the conditions that are applied when the document is scanned. Select the dialog box matched to the function, and make the desired setting. For details on the parameters in each of these dialog boxes, see the reference page indicated for the dialog box.
Mode [Black and White ED] is available for the DR-5020. The available modes are sometimes limited depending on the size of the paper. For details, see “DR-5020/5080C Scan Mode Tables” (P.88) in the DR-5020/5080C Instructions. [Black and White] This setting scans the image completely in black and white with no shade of gray.

• The contrast setting is disabled when [Mode] is set to [Black and White]. • On DR-5020, the [Contrast] checkbox is gray when [Mode] is set to [Black and MEMO White].
For details on high speed scanning, see P.52. Detect Page The DR-5020/5080C sets the scanning area according to the Size detected width and length of the document and scans the entire page.

2.4 Setting Scan Conditions Margin Adjusts the margins (top, bottom, left and right) of the scanning Scanning area. To adjust the margins, click Enable and use the buttons. Specify within the range –10 (reduces scanning area by 10 mm) to +10 (enlarges scanning area by 10 mm). For example, if you want to slightly enlarge the scanning area so that document edges are not clipped, adjust in the + direction.

2.4 Setting Scan Conditions <Filter settings> Set the image processing filters. Description Item Specify the contrast level within the range 1 to 13 by clicking the buttons. Default is 7. Sets the level for emphasizing the contour of lettering, and Edge Emphasis softening the roughness of images such as photos.

Imprinter/ Opens the Imprinter/Addon Settings dialog box (P69). Sets the Addon imprinter function or the addon function. The imprinter function prints specific characters on the scanned document when the optional imprinter unit is installed.
2.4 Setting Scan Conditions Imprinter/Addon Settings When the optional imprinter is installed, any characters and counters can be printed on the scanned document. When the addon function is used, any characters or counters can be added to the scanned image. The character strings to be printed or added by the addon function and their printing conditions are set in the Imprinter/Addon Settings dialog box.

2.4 Setting Scan Conditions Setting the Gamma Curve Set the gamma curve. The “gamma curve setting” uses gamma curve data prepared by the user to adjust the output values (output to the computer) with respect to the input values for 256 levels of MEMO brightness in the scanned image.

Chapter 2 Scanning a Document Click [Open]. This sets the gamma curve and returns the display to the Detail Settings dialog box. To set the gamma curve for other colors, repeat steps 1 to 4. Preparing Gamma Curve Data Gamma curve data is stored in a text file (*.gmm) comprising 258 lines. This file describes the output values for each of the 256 levels of input values.

3.1 When An Error Message is Displayed Message Scanner is busy. Check if it is CountOnly mode. Remedy The scanner may currently be in the Count Only mode (mode for counting the number of scanned document pages) (P.56). Cancel the Count Only mode, and try again. Message Scanner is busy.
Scanning Utility 5000 is not running correctly. Re-install the Scanning Utility 5000. See “1.2 Installing Scanning Utility 5000” (P.7). Other Causes If the above remedies do not rectify the problem, contact a Canon service department.
