    1 Introduction Your New Server When you use this kit to upgrade your HP NetServer LH 3000/3000r to an LH 6000/6000r, you end up with a new server. It retains the original serial and model numbers, but your upgraded server has many new capabilities. Reinstalling your network operating system (NOS) is an essential part of this upgrade.

    During the upgrade process, some NetServer LH 3000/3000r components are removed and replaced by LH 6000/6000r components. You can return all removed to parts to Hewlett-Packard for recycling. Purpose of This Guide This guide describes the steps you need to perform to convert the HP NetServer LH 3000/3000r to the HP NetServer LH 6000/6000r.

    Chapter 1 Introduction Chapter 4, "Installing LH 6000 Components," explains how to install DIMMs and processors, and how to install the new system board and power supply. Chapter 5, "Updating Firmware," explains how to update firmware and run the Setup and HP Diag Tools utilities, and lists the basic steps for reinstalling your NOS if necessary.

    2 Preparing for the Upgrade This chapter explains the steps to take before you begin the upgrade: Gather the tools you need. Back up your data. Save your current configuration settings. Check the internal event log. Tools You Need To install this accessory you need an anti-static service kit (3M 8501/8502/8503 or equivalent).

Be sure to write down the settings under these selections: Embedded LAN and SCSI Settings Boot Settings See your NetServer’s Installation Guide for more information about the Setup utility.

    3 Removing Components from the LH 3000/3000r Removing components from the HP NetServer LH 3000/3000r has these steps: Power off the NetServer. Remove covers and system board. Remove chassis guide and air baffles. WARNING Do not proceed with this upgrade without first purchasing the appropriate Power Supply Upgrade Kit.

    Chapter 3 Removing Components from the LH 3000/3000r Remove Chassis Guide and Air Baffles 1. Remove the thumbscrew holding the chassis guide in place as shown in Figures 3-3 (pedestal version) and 3-4 (rack-mounted version). NOTE You can use a T15 Torx driver to help remove this screw if necessary.

  • Page 21 Chapter 3 Removing Components from the LH 3000/3000r 2. Unscrew the non-captive thumbscrews securing the two air baffles to the chassis. In the HP NetServer LH 3000 (pedestal version), you can see the thumbscrews from the top of the NetServer. See Figure 3-5. In the HP NetServer LH 3000r (rack-mounted version), you can see the thumbscrews from the right side of the NetServer.

    4 Installing LH 6000/6000r Components This chapter explains the following steps to install the new HP NetServer LH 6000/6000r components: Install DIMMs in the new system board. Install processors in the new system board. Install new system board. Install third power supply. Install bezel nameplate and labels.

Locate the socket in which you will install the DIMM, and spread the two retaining clips outward (see Figure 4-2). 3. Hold the DIMM at a 90-degree angle to the system board. Be sure to handle the module by its ends;...
  • Page 25 Chapter 4 Installing LH 6000/6000r Components 5. Press the DIMM into the socket. The retaining clips close automatically if it is inserted properly. See Figure 4-3. CAUTION Do not rock the DIMM into place, but apply firm and even pressure directly downward. If the retaining clips do not close, remove the module and repeat Steps 3 through 5.

    Chapter 4 Installing LH 6000/6000r Components Install Processors Use the following guidelines when adding processors to your NetServer: This upgrade kit ships with two processors, but you can install up to six processors. You must add Intel Pentium III Xeon processors in ascending slot order. All processor modules must have the same clock speed and cache size.

VRM Socket Numbers CAUTION Do not remove the processor from its bag until you are ready to install it. Make sure the bag remains sealed. Before you remove a processor from the anti-static container, touch a grounded, unpainted metal surface on the HP NetServer to discharge static electricity.

Rotate the retaining latches into the flat, closed position. 6. If you are adding more than two processors, be sure to install them in the order indicated in Figure 4-4.

Identify the VRM socket(s) where you must install VRMs. Two VRMs have been preinstalled. All VRMs must be installed in ascending slot order as indicated in Figure 4-5.

Carefully reinsert the system board assembly into its guides. See Figures 4-9 and 4-10 for the correct orientation. 2.

The third power supply comes as part of the Power Supply Upgrade Kit. NOTE The Power Supply Upgrade Kit provides the third power supply, but does not provide redundancy.

From the back of the NetServer, loosen the thumbscrews and remove a filler panel from the power supply bay. See Figure 4-11. NOTE You can install the third power supply in either of the open power supply bays.

    Chapter 4 Installing LH 6000/6000r Components Install Bezel Nameplate and Labels 1. Locate the appropriate nameplate for your NetServer’s bezel. 2. Remove the old nameplate from your NetServer’s bezel using a needle nose pliers. 3. Secure the new LH 6000 (or LH 6000r) nameplate to the bezel as follows: For the pedestal version (LH 6000), locate the short nameplate shipped with this upgrade kit and snap it into place.

    5 Updating Firmware When you use this kit to upgrade your NetServer LH 3000/3000r to an LH 6000/6000r, you must perform the following steps: Update system firmware. Run the Setup utility. Run the HP DiagTools utility. Reinstall your NOS. Update System Firmware After upgrading the NetServer’s hardware, you must update your firmware using the HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM shipped with this upgrade kit.

    Chapter 5 Updating Firmware Run the Setup Utility After you update your BIOS, you must run the Setup utility to reset your configuration in CMOS. 1. Make sure the new HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM is still inserted and turn on power to the HP NetServer. 2.

    Chapter 5 Updating Firmware It is recommended that you run DiagTools now and test your NetServer LH 6000 before you reinstall your NOS. To run DiagTools you will: Create two DiagTools diskettes. Run the Basic System Test. Create a Support Ticket to view your test results, or print them and keep a permanent copy.

When the test is complete, you see a summary of the results. If all tests passed, you can either exit DiagTools or view or print your results by following the instructions in the section "Create a Support Ticket."...
