SONY ICF-M410L, ICF-M410S - FM/MW/LW/SW PLL Synthesized Radio Manual

Overview

To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose the unit to rain or moisture.
To avoid electrical shock, do not open the cabinet.
Refer servicing to qualified personnel only.
Do not install the appliance in a confined space, such as a bookcase or built-in cabinet.
To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not place objects filled with liquids, such as vases, on the apparatus.

Before You Begin

It will give you many hours of reliable service and listening pleasure.
Before operating the radio, please read these instructions thoroughly and retain them for future reference.
These instructions cover these models: ICF-M410L and ICF-M410S.
Their differences are shown below.

Features

PLL synthesized tuning 3 band radio.
A total of 20 channels can be preset, 10 FM channels, 5 MW and 5 LW or SW channels.
Easy to tune in a preset stations with 5 direct access buttons.
Sleep timer function switches the radio off automatically (can be set to turn off after 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes).
Standby timer function switches the radio on automatically at the time you want.

Choosing Power Source

Installing Batteries (See fig. A)
Choosing Power Source

Open the lid of the battery compartment at the rear of the unit.
Install three R6 (size AA) batteries (not supplied) with correct polarity and then close the lid.
"0:00" flashes on the display after you first install the batteries. To stop flashing, set the clock. (See "Setting the Clock".)

(Electronic Industries Association of Japan) The battery life may shorten depending on the operation of the unit.

Knowing when to replace the batteries
When the batteries become weak, the sound becomes weak and distorted. "" flashes on the display. When the batteries are completely exhausted, "" appears on the display and the power is turned off.
When "" appears, replace all the batteries with new ones.

To attach the battery compartment lid if it is accidentally detached (See Fig. B)

Put in one side of the lid as illustrated.
Push the other side to attach.

Note on replacing the batteries
Do not take more than 40 seconds to replace the batteries, otherwise the clock, standby settings and preset stations will be deleted from the memory.
Should that happen, reset the functions again. After the batteries are replaced, press POWER to turn the indication off.

Notes on batteries

Do not charge the dry batteries.
Do not carry the dry batteries with coins or other metallic objects. It can generate heat if the positive and negative terminals of the batteries are accidentally contacted by a metallic object.
When you are not going to use the unit for a long time, remove the batteries to avoid damage from battery leakage and corrosion.
Do not use different types of batteries at the same time.
When you replace the batteries, replace all with new ones.

Using House Current (See fig. C)

Connect the AC power adaptor (not supplied) to the DC IN 4.5 V jack firmly, and plug it into a wall outlet.

Notes on the AC power adaptor

When operating the unit with an external power source, do not remove the batteries. These batteries serve to backup settings stored to memory. Since batteries discharge in this case as well, we recommend changing them about once a year.
Before connecting and disconnecting the external power source plug, be sure to turn off the radio. Otherwise, "E" may be displayed. When this occurs, turn on the radio so that "E" disappears.
When operating the unit with the internal batteries, remove the AC power adaptor from the wall outlet and the DC IN 4.5 V jack. Make sure that the plug of the external power source is disconnected before operating the unit.
Use a commercially-available AC power adaptor* (rated output voltage/current: 4.5 V DC/700 mA). Do not use any other AC power adaptor.
Depending on the AC power adaptor, noise may be heard while using the unit. Refer to the operating instructions of the AC power adaptor.
Polarity of the plug

* The voltage of power supply is different depending on the country. Please buy an AC power adaptor in the country where the radio is to be used.

Setting the Clock

The display will flash "0:00" when the batteries are installed or the AC power adaptor is plugged in for the first time.
The clock can be adjusted when the radio is off.

To stop flashing of the display, press CLOCK (mb/CLOCK for ICF-M410S).
While holding down CLOCK, turn TUNE/TIME SET to set the clock to the current time.
When you turn the control knob a little to or , the clock digits move forward or back one by one, and when you turn the control knob further to or , the clock digits move rapidly.
When you release CLOCK, the clock starts operating, and ":" starts flashing.
24-hour system: "0:00" = midnight, "12:00" = noon

Changing MW Channel Step

The channel step of this unit is factory-set to 9 kHz. Match the frequency allocation system of the country as listed.
When needed, change the channel step before listening to the radio.

Press POWER to turn off the power.
While holding down CLOCK (mb/CLOCK for ICF-M410S), keep pressing POWER for more than 5 seconds.
The MW channel step will be changed.
If you proceed to step 2 again, the channel step changes again.

Note
When the MW channel step is changed, the preset stations for MW will be erased.

Operating the Radio

Manual Tuning

Press POWER.
Press BAND repeatedly to select the band.
When using FM1 or FM2 preset mode, you may listen to the radio on either mode. (See "Preset Tuning")
When you select SW: turn TUNE/TIME SET while pressing CLOCK (mb/CLOCK for ICF-M410S) to select a meter band. See "Frequency range for SW" for details on the meter band. When you select LW, MW and FM, follow the step 3.

Turn TUNE/TIME SET.
When you turn the control knob a little to or , the frequency digits move forward or back one step at a time, and when you turn the control knob further to or , the frequency digits move rapidly.
Adjust the volume using VOL.

To turn off the radio, press POWER.
To listen with an earphone (not supplied) is connected to the jack, the sound through the speaker cannot be heard.

To improve radio reception (See fig. D)

FM: Extend the telescopic antenna and adjust the length and the angle for best reception.
SW: Extend the telescopic antenna and adjust the length for the best reception.
MW/LW: Rotate the unit horizontally for optimum reception. A ferrite bar antenna is built in the unit.

Note
Adjust the direction of the antenna, holding the bottom of it. The antenna can be damaged when you move the antenna with excessive force.

Preset Tuning
You can preset up to 10 stations in FM (5 stations in FM1, 5 stations in FM2), 5 stations in MW, and 5 stations in LW or SW.

Presetting a Station
Example: To set FM 90 MHz in preset button 2 for FM2.

Press POWER.
Press BAND to select FM2.
Tune in FM 90 MHz.
Press the desired preset button for more than a few seconds (i.e., in this case, preset button 2).
You can hear the confirmation beep and preset number "2" appears in the display

To preset another station, repeat these steps.

To change the preset station, preset a new station number. The previous station will be cancelled.

Tuning in a Preset Station

Press POWER.
Select the band with BAND.
Press the desired preset tuning button.
Adjust the volume using VOL.

Setting the Standby Timer

You can set the radio to turn on at a preset time. You can set the standby timer whether or not the radio is turned on.

Hold down STANDBY until "" starts flashing.
While holding down STANDBY, turn TUNE/TIME SET to set the time for the radio to be turned on.
When STANDBY is released, the standby time is set and "" stops flashing.

The radio is turned on at the preset time and is automatically turned off after 60 minutes.

To turn off the radio, press POWER. The radio will be turned on at the preset time the next day.

To cancel the Standby Timer
Press STANDBY so that "" disappears.

Note
Holding down STANDBY for more than about a second sets the standby time.

Setting the Sleep Timer

By setting the sleep timer, you can fall asleep to the radio sound. The radio turns off automatically after a set time (60, 45, 30 or 15 minutes).

Press SLEEP.
The sleep timer setting of "60" is displayed and "" flashes.

If you press SLEEP while the radio is off, the radio turns on.
Press SLEEP repeatedly to select the desired sleep timer setting while "" is flashing.
Each press changes the display as follows:

"" appears three seconds after you set the sleep timer and the frequency is displayed.
The sleep timer starts operating.
Tune in to the desired station, and adjust the volume with VOL.
The radio will turn off automatically after the set time.

To turn off the sleep timer before the time has elapsed, press POWER.
To extend the time until the radio turns off, press SLEEP again to set the time.

Using Both Sleep Timer and Standby Timer
You can fall asleep to the radio sound and you will be awakened by the radio alarm at the preset time.

Set the standby timer. (See "Setting the Standby Timer")
Set the sleep timer. (See "Setting the Sleep Timer")

Preventing Accidental Change

– HOLD function
Slide HOLD. "" is displayed, indicating that all the functions of the buttons are locked.
To release the key protection, slide HOLD again so that "" disappears.

Precautions

Operate the unit only on 4.5 V DC. For battery operation, use three R6 (size AA) batteries. For AC operation, use only the recommended AC power adaptor.
The unit is not disconnected from the AC power source (mains) as long as it is connected to a wall outlet, even if the unit itself has been turned off.
Do not leave the unit in a location near heat sources, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, sand, excessive dust or mechanical shock.
The nameplate indicating operating voltage, etc. is located on the bottom exterior.
Should any solid object or liquid fall into the unit, disconnect the AC power adaptor and remove the batteries, and have the unit checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further. Make sure that no liquid or foreign material enters the DC IN 4.5 V jack of the unit. This may lead to the malfunction of the unit.
Since a strong magnet is used for the speaker, keep personal credit cards, etc., using magnetic coding away from the unit.
When the casing becomes soiled, clean it with a soft dry cloth moistened with mild detergent solution. Never use abrasive cleansers or chemical solvents, as they may deform the casing.
In vehicles or buildings, radio reception may be difficult or subject to interference. Try listening near a window.

Troubleshooting Guide

Should any problem persist after you have made the following checks, consult your nearest Sony dealer.

The front panel buttons do not operate at all

"" is displayed. Slide HOLD so that "" disappears.

Display is dim, or no indication is displayed

Weak batteries.
The unit is being used in extremely high or low temperatures or in a place with excessive moisture.

Very weak or interrupted sound, or unsatisfactory reception

Weak batteries.
In a vehicle or in a building, listen near a window.

A station cannot be received when a preset tuning button is pressed.

The station has not been preset.
The memory of the station has been erased. Preset the station again.

Sound is not heard and "" appears in the display.

Batteries are exhausted.
